Region 87 is a quarterly Russian-language magazine about the Chukotka Autonomous District. The publication’s name comes from Chukotka’s former place on standard lists of Russia’s regions. It is almost a misnomer now that the country has merged several provinces thus changing the composition of that list, but even now that designation alludes to just how far Chukotka is from the center of Russia.
From its first edition in winter 2006/07, this magazine has sought to cover every facet of Chukotkan life, from politics and social issues to business and economic development. Along the way, we’ve touched on topics such as education, language, culture, literature, fashion and native industries such as reindeer herding and marine hunting.
Life is different in Chukotka – it is where East meets West along the 180th Meridian, and where past meets present in both the rapid modernization of the region and the preservation of native culture. Life is changing in Chukotka as massive investment, begun under former governor Roman Abramovich and expected to continue with his successor Roman Kopin, transforms what was once one of Russia’s forgotten outposts to a province with solid infrastructure and a growing economy.
This special English-language edition of the magazine brings together a collection of articles from Region 87’s first two years, with a special focus on tourism in Chukotka. With this issue, we want to provide the broader public with a taste of the uniqueness of this province on the Far Eastern tip of the Eurasian continent. Surely, some of the articles start with a flourish, but stick with us as you are bound to learn something new and unexpected.
